2025 Fall Workshop Series

Intermediate Flatpicking Guitar

with Howie Bergeron

Howie is no stranger to the Wednesday jam and always takes us up a notch or two when he walks in with his vintage Martin.  That’s because Howie is no stranger to the stage as a professional musician.  Living in the Kimberly area, he worked in the 80’s with rock and roll bands such as Trammer and later with a couple of top-flight dance bands called Sensation and the Rockin’ TBirds.  With family life intervening, he has more recently returned to the stage at festivals, bars and night clubs with friends, Jake Buckley, Mike Stack, and Maddie Storvold.

It’s true Howie is often seen on stage with an electric guitar, but his passion is acoustic bluegrass, and he is delighted to share with the club some of his flatpicking insights. In this intermediate workshop, the focus will be on cross picking concepts, patterns, and rolls. Howie looks forward to sharing various ideas and musical anecdotes that he has gathered on his musical journey.

Stay In Your Lane
Vocal Harmony

with Pamela Mae & Doug Ritchie

Pamela Mae & Doug Ritchie first sang harmonies together in Edmonton’s Riverdale Bluegrass Band, forming a lifetime friendship and shared love of "drop in the bucket" three-part bluegrass harmonies. Doug once spun bluegrass deep cuts on CJSR, and aside from being a golf pro, he still plays banjo, guitar, and writes songs. Pamela Mae tours with folk troubadour Scott Cook playing upright bass and clawhammer banjo.

Despite travelling different paths of late, this duo still has a passion for that high lonesome sound, and they are thrilled to reunite for this “quick and dirty” harmony-finding workshop.  They’ll share Michael Daves’ scale-interval method for working out 3-part harmonies—no reading music required. Bring your instrument, your voice, your Do-Re-Mi, and your readiness to learn a method that will help you "stay in your lane" when it comes to your vocal part.

2025 Fall Workshop Series

Intermediate Bluegrass Bass

with Kenny Mak

Kenny Mak is well known in local bluegrass circles as the jokester behind the Prairie Sky rhythm section.  Born in Winnipeg (you knew he had to be), Kenny started playing bass in 1982. He is self-taught -- studying and copying the greats while developing the Mak style we know and love.

His philosophy about the bass: “it’s an instrument that no one notices until it’s not there.  It’s the glue of the band; it fills the low end, and I love being part of the rhythm section.”  Having started as a drummer, Kenny comes by that love of rhythm honestly.  He has played drums and bass in several musical genres but prefers the jamming element of bluegrass.  “Where else can you jump in with people you don't know and play a tune, on stage, in a hall, living room, or the middle of a field.”

Join Kenny in exploring bass fundamentals.  Tell him what you want to learn by email at kenny@kennymak.net and he’ll do his best to make it happen so we have a successful session.
Sign up now for this November workshop -- before it’s too late.

Fiddle Tricks for Jamming with Jarred Albright

Wednesday, June 18, 2025
Pleasantview Community Hall
10860 57-Ave, Edmonton
7:00-8:30 pm.

Jarred Albright has played the violin since he was seven years old, and music has been his focus ever since. He discovered the joys of fiddle style and spent his early years with the Calgary Fiddlers performing over a hundred times a year before entering post-secondary to pursue jazz performance at Grant MacEwan University.

Since then, Jarred he has endeavoured to teach himself to sing and play mandolin, guitar, and banjo. Music has taken him around the world including the United States, South Korea, England, Scotland, and Ireland. These days Jarred keeps busy performing with many diverse local acts, recording and producing from his home studio, ceaselessly practicing, and sharing his love of music with his students.

Jarred is excited to share that love with our club, focussing on fiddle tricks and tips for bluegrass jamming. He will have some great short cuts and tackle the skill of playing in different keys.

If you want to learn more from Jarred after the workshop, give him a call he would be happy to help you along on your musical journey.
